When I landed in New York, my host family had arranged for the Travelers Aid Society to come pick me up because I hardly knew English at all. I could read and write, but I couldn’t speak or understand very much. Some very nice ladies came and picked me up and they put me on a train to Chicago, and from Chicago there were other nice ladies who came and picked me up and put me on a train to Mason City, Iowa where my host family was waiting for me. The family that sponsored me were very distant relatives of my father, so we were acquainted with the family before I came over.
