An Unusual Trip
An unusual trip happened many years ago when I was going to travel to Moscow. I went to Moscow to assist another surgeon in a plastic surgery procedure that he had developed. There were three doctors from the United States that were going to go with me in the middle of January. January in Moscow, as you know really freezing. But I went there right after the first of the year. The day right before I was to headed to Moscow, I was in Germany at the time, the Russian doctor decided to postpone the meeting until after the religious holiday Epiphany. It was too late to change my tickets from Germany to Moscow and it was snowing. I had to find a place that wasn’t snowing, icing and freezing to spend five days before I could meet him. I started looking at different options and I decided I needed to go South. My first thoughts were Libya, Algeria, and Egypt because I had never been there before, but you needed a visa to go to those places. The only place that I did not need a visa was Turkey. So I said okay, Turkey it is!
I spent four days in Istanbul. The weather was 60° and wonderful, I had a great time. I visited everything there alone, but I had my private guide. Then I went to Moscow after that and I visited with this physician, it was really freezing. When I was there eight people died of exposure in Moscow, because it was like -30°. It was terrible, but out of a really troubled situation, I was able to make something interesting.
There are a few places I would like to go that we haven’t been to before. I’d like to go to Iran, but Betty doesn’t because of the political situation. So we probably will not go to Iran any time soon. We’ve been repeating some of the places we’ve been to 30 to 40 years ago. We have to refresh our memories about some places. Sometimes we forget about a city that we’ve been to after three years and think let’s go back to this place! These places are changing and it is a lot easier to travel these days. Back when we started traveling the infrastructure in many places was not great, but now the infrastructure is better in a lot of these places. Which is especially great for older citizens like us to travel. Our next trip is in March and we are going to Bhutan.
